Local Vendor Call: 30 Crafts Market

I personally don't know much about this event but tables are reasonably priced at just $25 each so if you live in the Peterborough, Ontario area and want some exposure for your handmade items this seems like a great opportunity. According to the 30 Crafts Market website there will be two dates for the event, May 12, 2012 and December 8th, 2012. Some categories are already filling up for the May show so don't wait too long before applying. The event will be held in the lower level of the Peterborough Library and showcase handmade goods all under $30. Sounds like it is going to be a great show!

Canadian Couponing: My Food Basics + Canadian Tire

If you are a frequent reader you may have noticed two things:
1) I added a little tracker in my sidebar but I lost track post baby/in the midst of my Heartsy deal how much I've actually been saving. That's not to say that I haven't been sale/flyer watching and matching my coupons because I sure have, I don't think I can ever shop any other way again. I guess since my tracker is behind I will have to work even harder to get it caught up by the end of the year!
2) I haven't been updating my fabulous shopping trips as much. I promise that I will post more frequently now that the new baby is 3 months old (already...how did that happen) and I am actually sleeping a reasonable amount of time most nights. I also want to focus on some local couponing, where to get coupons, what is available where, and any great sales prices! Good deals are in bold!

So on to the shoppping!!!!

Canadian Tire:
A couple of weeks ago there was a $2 off of propane along with the Canadian Tire flyer in the Kawartha Lakes This Week. Needed propane and were heading to Food Basics so just made sense to do it all in one trip. Also used the 8X Canadian Tire Money when you buy gas coupon on the back of this week's Canadian Tire flyer and put some go go juice in the car.

Food Basics:
Rougemont Apple Juice- on for 99cents a can. Used 50cents off WUB2 (when you buy 2)= 75cents/can
Broccoli -97cents (saved approx $1)
Hotdog and hamburger buns (12 packs) 2/$5= 58 cents savings
Dempsters Whole Grain Breads 2/$5= 58 cents savings-$1 coupon= $1.58 saved!
2xAlphagettis on sale for 59 cents a can! (saved approx. $1)
Cherries on sale for $1.88/lb
24 pack of Selections Natural Spring Water $1.88

Local: MAP Photography

I love to support handmade and small businesses but it's even better to share stories of those you grew up with! Melissa and I have known each other since grade school and I am thrilled to be able to share her story with you:

Map Photo ... aka ... Melissa Arnold Photography started out as a hobby that grew in to a passion to capture life's special moments.
Melissa is a busy mom of 3 and a full time nurse. Her photography business began out of a love for the medium and turned into a way to help supplement her family's income. Melissa provides photography services for families, engagements, weddings, and has most recently added themed shoots to the mix, having just finished up a Trash the Dress shoot, proving to be the most fun so far. She is currently in the planning stages of creating a 1920's themed shoot, which should prove to be a very exciting moment for her business.
Currently booking fall family shoots, it is a wonderful season for photography with the bright colours, families look beautiful dressed in layers, colourful sweater, scarves, hats etc. She is looking forward to a successful fall season and 2011 Wedding Season.

You can view her Photography on Facebook or on her website.
She can also be contacted by e-mail at marnoldphotograph@hotmail.com
or by phone at 705- 742-3952 or 705 -772-7983.

Are you a small business or handmade business in the Peterborough or City of Kawartha Lakes area and would like to share your story? Just email me at kawarthabeads@gmail.com

Make Your Own Beaded Bookmark!

I posted this on our Rouge River Beads blog last year but making bookmarks is so much fun I thought I'd share with you again. They are a fairly easy beginner project and make the perfect gift!

Supplies:
7" of beading wire
two crimp beads
a charm
6-10 beads depending on size
1 jump ring
1 beadable bookmark
flatnose pliers or a crimp tool

To begin, thread the beading wire through the crimp bead and the charm.

Bring the beading wire back through the crimp bead and crimp with a crimping tool, or flatten with pliers.
Add your beads in whatever order you like.

Add another crimp bead. Thread wire over the jump ring then thread the tail of your wire through your crimp bead and a couple of beads.

Crimp or flatten your crimp bead. Trim excess wire.

Open your jump ring and add the bookmark. Most bookmarks have a hole through which you can thread something. I find it easiest to attach everything to a jump ring. It's easier to turn around if you happen to have your charm backwards!

And voila! You now have your own bookmark to enjoy or give as a gift

For supplies you need to make your own beaded bookmark stop by Rouge River Beads.
Happy crafting!

The Next Step...

So where to now? I am hoping that this blog will be a great resource for artisans/crafters in the City of Kawatha Lakes, Peterbourgh and Durham areas. Over the course of the next few months I will be featuring local artisans/shops, compiling a list of crafty events in the area (with a sidebar link) and hope to add some tips/tricks and other resources. If you are a local artist and would like to be featured, know of an event or have a tip or trick to share send your submissions to kawarthabeads@gmail.com
