January Round-Up

It's hard to believe that the first month of a brand new year is already behind us! I'm thrilled with my business progress for January 2012 so I thought I would share it with you.

My goal for the month was to get to 160 listings in my Etsy shop (that was my own personal "magic number"). I am currently sitting at 136 listings with a couple of items completed and photographed that I still have to list and a couple of items that sold this week that I still have to relist, so overall not too bad. I had noticed last year that once I maintained approx. 120 items in my shop sales were much steadier. Whether I appear more frequently in search results, have a wider variety of items for shoppers to choose from, or a combination of those factors (and others I'm sure) it is always nice to see that "Congratulations you have a sale" notification more and more frequently. Let's hope that every month continues to show such a good growth over the previous year!

January also saw me place my first order for bulk supplies and I am now able to offer both miniature bookmarks and keyrings as wholesale items or bulk buys (such as wedding or shower favours). I also have a massive stockpile of envelopes on hand and am ready to tackle the year and continue to expand.

Looking ahead to February....
Goals for February include getting to (and maintaining) my 160 shop listings, expanding my collection of charms for all the items I make, develop and list my collection of charm bracelets, introducing a new line of gunmetal jewellery and posting more frequently on my blog and facebook pages. Whew! Looks like it is going to be a busy month!

I personally don't know much about this event but tables are reasonably priced at just $25 each so if you live in the Peterborough, Ontario area and want some exposure for your handmade items this seems like a great opportunity. According to the 30 Crafts Market website there will be two dates for the event, May 12, 2012 and December 8th, 2012. Some categories are already filling up for the May show so don't wait too long before applying. The event will be held in the lower level of the Peterborough Library and showcase handmade goods all under $30. Sounds like it is going to be a great show!

What would you like people to know about you as a person?
I'm a stay at home mom and a teacher. I love everything diy, and especially textiles. I love to sew, crochet and dangle in upcycling projects.

Tell me a bit about your art and your products. What inspires you?
I love baby stuff- so cute! I first started crocheting as a hobby and I had a hard time finding plain, cute things for my son to wear. He is a great model, and I find myself evolving my creations based on what he likes or what I want him to wear. I design and make all of my hats.

How do you share your creations? Where can we find you?
i have an etsy shop (www.littlejennywren.etsy.com), a fb page and I have my hats in some local businesses.

What is your most important lesson since starting your craft/business?
Be flexible. Try something out and see your customer's reaction. If it doesnt' work, try something else. I do alot of custom orders- this way I can make it to the customer's specifications.

Can you believe that it is the middle of November already! It won't be long before Christmas morning is upon us! For those of you who are doing your holiday shopping online this year and avoiding all of those crazy crowds at the mall the shipping deadlines for Kawartha Beads are as follows

What would you like people to know about you as a person? I am a very hard working single mom to an amazing daughter. Who is always wanting to meet new ppl and try new things. I love working on my crafts esp my dreamcatchers. Or spending time with my daughter wether we are shopping, going out for dinner, or just sitting watching a movie or talking about life.

I was down on my luck as some would say back in 2006 and in a homeless shelter, A native lady came in and held a class and taught many of us how to make the dreamcatchers. I found it extreamly relaxing and comforting. When ever I feel anxious or stressed I start making them and it calms me. I love the beauty and variety that dreamcatchers come in. All you need is a little imaginiation and anything is possible. I love to teach others this as well as make and sell my as well.

The Halfway Through The Year Mark

It's hard to believe that half of 2011 has already come and gone. What a year it has been!!! Despite afew bumps along the way including pregnancy, a newborn, a postal strike, putting the house up for sale and a death in the family I am pleased with both how my business has grown and how I have slowly but surely begun to save some major money couponing/sale matching.

What will the rest of the year have in store for us? Above all else I am of course hoping for the health and well being of my wonderful family. I can hardly believe that my oldest just turned 3 and the baby is now a bubbling 4 month old! Hopefully we are able to sell our house in the next couple of months and I only have one more dress size to loose and I will be the same size I was pre-baby #1!

On a business front I sold 58 items in my Etsy shop in the first half of the year. Not bad given everything that went on. I think that selling 70 items from that shop for the second half of the year (an increase of approx. 20%) is a reasonable goal given my ability to focus a little more on it, that it is the holiday season and that I have almost doubled my inventory selection. I am hoping to reach the 120 listing mark and be able to maintain that, if not grow it more, through the holiday season. As for my Artfire studio it has come a LONG way. Thanks to the Heartsy promotion I have grown my sales numbers there to an amazing 214. Hopefully I have some return customers through the second part of the year and continue to have new buyers find my treasures there.

On a couponing front I have $759.80 left to go to reach my coupon savings goal by the end of the year. While that may seem like a lofty endeavour the first portion of the year was really spent learning the ropes. Now that I have a bit of a handle on things I believe it is absolutely do-able (I save $26.50 on today's shopping trip alone) plus I will be able to redeem some airmiles, hbc points and optimum points shortly which will help me reach that goal.

Canadian Couponing: My Food Basics + Canadian Tire

If you are a frequent reader you may have noticed two things:
1) I added a little tracker in my sidebar but I lost track post baby/in the midst of my Heartsy deal how much I've actually been saving. That's not to say that I haven't been sale/flyer watching and matching my coupons because I sure have, I don't think I can ever shop any other way again. I guess since my tracker is behind I will have to work even harder to get it caught up by the end of the year!
2) I haven't been updating my fabulous shopping trips as much. I promise that I will post more frequently now that the new baby is 3 months old (already...how did that happen) and I am actually sleeping a reasonable amount of time most nights. I also want to focus on some local couponing, where to get coupons, what is available where, and any great sales prices! Good deals are in bold!

So on to the shoppping!!!!

Canadian Tire:
A couple of weeks ago there was a $2 off of propane along with the Canadian Tire flyer in the Kawartha Lakes This Week. Needed propane and were heading to Food Basics so just made sense to do it all in one trip. Also used the 8X Canadian Tire Money when you buy gas coupon on the back of this week's Canadian Tire flyer and put some go go juice in the car.

I was recently introduced to Heartsy.me, a site for lovers of handmade to get great deals on jewellery, bath and body products, paper delights and more. For handmade businesses it looks like it can be a great opportunity to gain some exposure for your shop and introduce your products to a new set of customers. I viewed it as a sort of out of the box method of advertising. So I decided, why not, I love a great deal and why shouldn't Kawartha Beads customers have a chance to grab some goodies at a great price. The application process is sort of nervewracking...will they like me...will they really really like me! The initial voting process is anonymous, as a seller you submit 5 photos of your products and the community votes on if they would purchase your products at a deal or not. Currently you need 60 YES DEFINTATELY votes within a certain time frame for your deal to be reviewed at the next stage. I guess some people really do like me!!! Now I sit and wait a response from the next stage of the process which can take approx. 10+days. Artfire Top Sellers List

Well I was definately curious to see how shops have been growing over the past month and many shops seem to have had a good number of sales. I have noticed traffic in my own shop growing steadily even with being closed for a couple of weeks to welcome new baby. Now that we are settled at home I am reenergized to kick things into high gear. I thought it might be interesting to see how many pages of listings the handmade sellers have and if that plays a role in sales. Of course there are some with only a couple of pages and some with oodles. The average number of pages that the handmade sellers have listed is 14.6! I currently have 7 pages listed in my own shop so I am going to try and hit the 10 page mark by the end of the month. Our new addition (baby #2) is scheduled to arrive via csection on April 14th so I will be taking the next few days "off" to get some extra things done before heading to the hospital. My girlfriends also turned me to a couple more Canadian coupon sites, flyerland.ca (totally awesome if your Michael's coupon didn't come in the paper) and websaver.ca in addition to last week's coupon sites. Some of those coupons have already arrived and paired with grocery flyers in hand I scoured the deals and was pleasantly pleased with the outcome. Here were some of my savings this week:

Addicted to Coupons!

I have always been fond of saving a dollar or two, I mean who isn't?! Now that I am on maternity leave and baby #2 is only 2 weeks away each and every dollar counts even more. A couple of girlfriends have been teaching me the ins and outs of couponing and I have become ADDICTED!

I knew that coupons were big in the United States but I wasn't aware of how many great sites/deals are out there for Canadians too. Two online coupon sites that the girls swear by are http://save.ca/ and http://brandsaver.ca/. I have ordered my coupons and can't wait for them to arrive, especially the diaper ones. I've begun to pay much closer attention to the coupons available for pick up right in the grocery store and now proudly store them in an envelope in my purse awaiting a chance to use them.

The girls and I did a coupon exchange last week, swaping and sharing coupons that we no longer needed or had extras of. With the coupons this week I saved $3 off my little guys haircut, $1.50 off of pullups and I caved to McD's craving and used the One Can Dine coupon for $4.89 (I love the nuggets which I think the combo regularly is a little over $6). I also signed up for the rewards program at Pampers.ca and have my eye on a couple of gifts for my toddler who's birthday is coming up and a Bounce Dryer Bar (I've always wanted to try one). It's not much but it's a start and by golly there is alot to learn! I would love to hear more tips, trick and advise from other coupon mammas out there.
